Two decades of Linux: the big open source stories of 2011

In 1999, Linux founder Linus Torvalds joked about plans for world domination. But as the Linux kernel celebrated its 20th birthday this year, Linux, and open source in general, have achieved a limited version of world domination. As we reported in August, Linux in its

By John Cheese  Published: January 05th, 2012
After a couple years of sending my girlfriend a clear message of, "We're never getting married," I proposed. There are reasons it took me so long to come around, but none of them fell into those magazine/sitcom stereotypes (which

State of the Browser: Chrome closes on Firefox, IE6 dying out

The browser story in December mirrored the broader 2011 trends. After a surprising result in November, in which it held steady, Internet Explorer resumed normal service in December, with its market share continuing to fall. Chrome once more made gains, closing the gap wi

Apple's first major legal win against Android is no slam dunk

The International Trade Commission handed down a ruling on Monday saying that several of HTC's smartphones infringed on an Apple patent and would be subject to an import ban beginning in April 2012. The case is important for Apple, as it is the first substantive ruling

Facebook looks to fix PHP performance with HipHop virtual machine

Look at the URL of most pages on Facebook, and you'll see a ".php" in there somewhere. That's because Facebook has leaned heavily on the PHP scripting language to develop the Web-facing parts of the site. PHP's popularity and simplicity made it easy for the company's dev

Common sense would dictate that if you were given a list of choices, you would choose the one that is most important to you, when in reality humans usually choose the one that is easiest for them to understand and evaluate.

Ottimo articolo.

Siri Hacked to Run on an iPod Touch and iPhone 4

Apple's new Siri voice recognition system is only officially available to new iPhone 4S users. Predictably, over the past few weeks, there have been various attempts to port Siri to previous generation hardware. The early versions of these hacks, however, simply got the user interface working on the iPhone 4, but were unable to actually use the voice recognition due to authentication issues in connecting to Apple's servers.

Tonight, developers @stroughtonsmith and @chpwn have been able to bypass this hurdle and have been able to get Siri working on previous generation hardware. This video shows it on an iPod Touch:

After seven years, Apple open sources its Apple Lossless Audio Codec

Apple first introduced its own lossless audio compression format, Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), in 2004 with iTunes 4.5. This Thursday—seven years later—the company made the code for its encoder and decoder available under an Apache 2.0 open source license.

ALAC is similar to another common open lossless format know as FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), but uses an MPEG 4-compliant QuickTime container. ALAC is supported in iTunes as well as Apple's popular iPod and all iOS devices. For audiophiles who can't stand lossy formats like AAC or MP3, it offers a better sounding alternative. Unlike AAC or MP3, though, which tends to compress files around 10:1, lossless ALAC files only save about 50 percent of your disk space.

Facebook sees 600,000 compromised logins per day—0.06% of all logins

Facebook has released a statistic showing that fewer than one-tenth of one percent of logins into the social network are compromised.

But since more than 1 billion Facebook logins occur each day, that could add up to 600,000 breaches every 24 hours.

More than just sexy phones: how Nokia will help sell Windows Phone 7

Nokia's plan is for its Lumia handsets, and Windows Phone, to be unmissable. Advertisements will inundate the Web, TV, and cinema. The TV and cinema ads are big, bouncy, and brightly colored.

Their tagline is "The Amazing Everyday": using your phone should be fun, easy, and exciting, making every day "amazing."
